Almost half of Kiwis consider Duke and Duchess' $1m visit bad use of taxpayer money

Almost half of New Zealanders consider the $1 million price tag to host the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a bad use of taxpayers’ money.

It comes as Prince Harry and Meghan are due to touch down on New Zealand soil on Sunday.

The latest 1 NEWS Colmar Brunton Poll showed 48 per cent of those polled thought the trip, which is set to cost the Government about $1m, was a bad use of taxpayers’ money.

Thirty-nine per cent considered it a good use of taxpayer money and 12 per cent were undecided.

People who were more likely to think the $1 million is a bad use of money were Pacific people, people aged between 18-34 and people living in Otago or Southland.

Those who were more likely to think it was a good use of money were people aged 55 and over, households with annual incomes over $150,000 and National Party supporters.

Prime Minister Jacinda said today she thought the royal visit would be beneficial to New Zealanders.

"There is a huge focus on their movements around the world… at the same time Tourism New Zealand leverages off their visit."

Interviewing took place from October 15 to October 19, with 1006 eligible voters contacted either by landline or mobile phone. The maximum sampling error was ±3.1 per cent.
