Many New Zealanders aren't being sun smart, according to new research by the University of Otago.

In a study of over 2500 adults and children in outdoor areas across Wellington, only 4.3 per cent of people wore sun hats and only 10.7 per cent were in the shade during peak hours.

New Zealand has the highest rate of melanoma in the world.
