Changes to adoption laws will take time, the Prime Minister said today, but she maintained the Government knows "it's a problem", after broadcaster Toni Street criticised the current legislation.

Street called it a "long, slow, complicated" process after her son was born via surrogacy in August.

"We are still waiting to legally adopt our biological son," she wrote on Instagram.

"Any law change we do make does take time," Jacinda Ardern said today. "And in the process of undertaking a review on surrogacy it does make sense to fix the other parts that are antiquated as well."

"We know it's a problem."

She said they attempted to get the previous Government to start working on it, and it was now part of the Ministry of Justice's work programme.

"But it is going to take a little bit of time," she said.

Ms Ardern replied to Street's Instagram post writing: "The adoption act is well over 50-years-old and definitely needs fixing. It's on our work programme!"
