This week political news has seen Clarke Gayford rumours cleared up, upset over the waka-jumping bill and unions fighting for higher wages.
Q+A's Corin Dann offers answers to the questions surrounding the week in politics.
Rumours about the Prime Minister's partner Clarke Gayford
Q) Why if they’re not true, is the mainstream media reporting their existence?
A) Because the Police Commissioner went on the record to debunk them, but call me old fashioned, isn’t that the difference between gossip and journalism?
Q) Why did the police commission we feel the need to come out and confirm they’re not true?
A) I don’t know, but the question is now, will the Police be doing this on a regular basis?
Upset over proposed waka-jumping bill
Q) Why are the Green MPs getting upset over whether to support the electoral integrity bill also known as the waka -umping bill?
A) It’s a matter of principle for some of the Greens, but really, out of all the issues of contention? Is this the one the Greens would risk it all on? Remember this is part of NZ Frist’s agreement with Labour
Unions expectations of Labour Government
Q) Unions have big expectations of Labour Governments, the midwives are already flexing their muscles looking for higher wages, how long before other unions start getting toey with demands for higher wages?
A) With half the population not getting a pay rise over the last 12 months and wage growth going nowhere, very soon I’d say one group that could also be protesting this term is farmers. Labour’s promising a much tougher line with farmers on water quality, not to mention greenhouse gas emissions.
