New Zealand-born defensive player Andrew Motuapuaka has been signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent.

The linebacker, who was born in Auckland to Tongan parents, was a three-year starter at Virginia Tech and was snapped up by the Jaguars after going undrafted in the three days of the NFL draft.

The 22-year-old will now fight for a spot in the 53-man roster through rookie minicamp next week and training camp in July ahead of the season starting in September.

With Jacksonville possessing one of the league’s most vaunted defences, experts predict that Motuapuaka’s best way onto a roster will be through special teams on kick returns and kick coverage.

He was given a 4.49 rating from NFL.com and thought to be of a level to earn a training camp spot.

"Motuapuaka is a productive three-year starter and team leader who plays with a consistent level of grit," NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein said.

"He has a shot to compete for a roster spot if he can shine with toughness and special teams play."
