Police are appealing for witnesses to the serious crash which left Kiwi road cyclist Alexander Ray in a critical condition.
Ray was struck by a car while out cycling yesterday morning and was immediately taken to Auckland Hospital where he was put in an induced coma.
Police have confirmed the incident happened shortly after 6am yesterday at the intersection of Morningside Drive and New North Road.
"The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and are appealing to the public for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact us," police said in a statement.
A close friend of Ray who is also an elite cyclist, Roman van Uden, told the NZ Herald that he visited his friend in hospital.
"He is not conscious right now and was unconscious at the scene of the accident," van Uden said.
"He is being kept unconscious and has significant facial and shoulder fractures and rib fractures. He is going into surgery at the moment, to monitor his brain swelling."
Ray was diagnosed with Leptospirosis in 2016, a condition which caused his kidneys and liver to fail.
Ray fought through the illness and got back on his bike. He is a semi-road racing cyclist and rides for Team McDonalds Down Under.
