Stage set for colourful Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on Gold Coast

The stage is set for tonight's opening ceremony of the 21st Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast.

1 NEWS has a big team over there covering the Games, including our Australia correspondent Kimberlee Downs and sports presenter Andrew Saville who set the scene for a colourful opening ceremony.

More than 6,500 athletes from 71 nations and territories are taking part in the Games, first contested in 1930 as the Empire Games.

There are 253 Kiwi athletes there, the largest New Zealand team assembled at any overseas sporting event.

They'll compete in 18 sports and seven para-sports over the next 11 days.
