An apology has briefly appeared online from the Mongrel Mob member who filmed himself verbally abusing Kiwi actor James Rolleston, most famous for his role in Taika Waititi's film Boy.

A Facebook post from Tauranga man Clyde Koriki, takes responsibility for the footage of Rolleston being abused which emerged today.

Koriki shared the original video of him abusing Rolleston with the message:

"I just wanna take full responsibility for this video it was really immature and stupid of me to do this.

"Secondly I wanna apologise to James for exposing him and stepping on his pride and dignity the way I did," the message reads.

Mr Koriki also wrote about how his video had caused backlash from social media users abusing him and his family.

"Can everybody quit with the nasty ass messages cos nothing will change the outcome no matter what you say.

"At this time I was going through a lot I had lost my family.

"I make mistakes and this was honestly a big one, I am truly sorry and only sorry to james and his whanau.

"Also can everybody commenting on this video leave my daughter out of the picture coz it shakes me crazy to see people talking about my family."

However the post from Koriki, that was captured in screenshots by other uses, has since been taken down.

The footage responsible for the apology was reportedly taken last year in Tauranga, and begins with a person in a vehicle calling out to Rolleston, who is walking along a waterfront area.

The man in the car then asks Rolleston if he "wants a fight" before calling him a "pussy" and saying his "movie was sh*t".

The video then flips around to a man clad in Mongrel Mob patches, who verbally abuses Rolleston, and yells, "Your movie was sh*t".

"We just stepped our boy."

Facebook users were critical of the video and highly supportive of Rolleston when the footage first surfaced earlier today, with comments such as, "What an absolute disgrace to your chapter", "Uz should all come to the far north and do that weaksh*t catch ur self a Ngapuhi hongi real quick" and "Look how beautiful, honest and genuine of a smile [Rolleston] gave them piece of sh*ts".

A spokesperson for Rolleston told 1 NEWS "the incident shown in the video occurred in Tauranga in 2017".

"Though unpleasant, this was an isolated event and did not escalate any further than shown."

In 2016, the successful Kiwi actor was involved in a car accident in Opotiki which almost claimed his and his close friend's life.

Rolleston was in recent Kiwi film The Breaker Upperers.

Police would not confirm to 1 NEWS whether a complaint over the incident has been made.
