The Kaikoura community has had a rough time, the earthquakes and then the isolation - with State Highway 1's closure bringing tourism to a standstill.

But as the road is rebuilt, the community is on the mend too - thanks to people like Jill Hann.

Every Monday night she puts on a community dinner.

Road workers away from home, tourists, locals, anyone who wants a feed and some company can partake.

And that is what makes Jill this week's ASB Good as Gold winner.
