Kiwis raising funds for mother to be by critically injured son's Aussie bedside for Christmas

December 20, 2017

A mother is desperately trying to be with her son over Christmas, as he lies in a Brisbane hospital bed in a critical condition.

Mason Ainsworth, 21, who lived with his father in Australia, was found at the bottom of a swimming pool with a broken neck and a damaged spinal chord, reports NZME.

He was planning on flying back to New Zealand to spend Christmas with his mother Lee Ainsworth in Hawke's Bay, but she instead "received the news no mother ever wants to receive".

Family friend Michelle Flavel created a Givealittle page  on Monday to raise funds for Ms Ainsworth and her daughter to be with Mr Ainsworth over Christmas.

"It's hour by hour at the moment," Ms Flavel told NZME.

"We can't do anything, we can't make him better... but what we can do is support her by offering some financial support."

"She's a single mum and she's doing the best she can by her kids."

"The money will go towards Mason's recuperation and the costs associated with his recovery and rehabilitation, as well as helping his mother be by his bedside," the page description reads.

As of 1pm today, $7,974 had been donated.
