Fleeing driver charged after allegedly hitting officer with vehicle in Whakatane

A man is due to appear in court after a police officer was hit by a car near Whakatane, as the vehicle was fleeing.

Police say the male officer was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.

The incident happened in Awakeri this morning.

A 26-year-old man is due to appear in Opotiki District Court tomorrow morning.

He is charged with theft, failing to stop, and dangerous driving.
