An Auckland refuge is calling for food donations, however they're up to their ears in tinned tomatoes and beans.
Charity The Aunties have stopped taking donations of tinned tomatoes, deeming them useless for women and children, Fairfax reports.
Spokesperson Jackie Clark said inside a refuge or emergency house was "always bloody tinned tomatoes because nobody eats the things".
The tinned products often needed other ingredients and supplies which many of the people who needed support, don't have.
Caroline Herewini of Porirua Māori Women's Refuge told Fairfax they ask for fresh meat and vegetables, however are still given tinned tomatoes and beans.
The charities welcomed donations but asked for people to check what was needed first.
"Give us the means to get what we need, and what we need right now is food for the table," Ms Herewini said.
