Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation after a stairwell filled with smoke at Auckland's SkyCity hotel and casino.

Firefighters were called just after midnight today to a fire in the wall of the stairwell. Two people were treated by ambulance staff, a Fire Emergency NZ spokesman says.

The fire was dealt with quickly but it was not clear what started it, he said.

Meanwhile, a large blaze has destroyed a factory in the suburb of Penrose but no one was hurt.

The fire, in Great South Road, started about 8.30pm on Thursday and required about a dozen fire crews to control.

The building was substantially damaged, the spokesman said.

A witness said the stairwell on the Victoria Street side was filled with smoke.

Fire communications confirmed to 1 NEWS that they received a call just after midnight on Friday morning that there was smoke in the stairwell.

Upon arrival, crews sighted the smoke and raised the alarm further due to the amount of people in the area.

The area around the stairwell, including parts of the hotel, was evacuated as there was a small fire in the wall of the stairwell, a fire spokesperson said.

It's been a big night for the fire service, with two major incidents across the city after an earlier blaze at a factory in Penrose.

People at SkyCity appear to be going about their usual business in other parts of the building, although a number of people are outside the building beneath the SkyTower.

There’s been a big response with a HAZMAT truck, eleven other fire trucks and two ambulances.

St. John's ambulance are standing by to treat anyone that may have suffered smoke inhalation.

There are no longer any signs of smoke.

Police have closed a part of Victoria Street West opposite SkyCity.
