"Well done NW Waikanae. Brilliant idea!" Loretta Pomare wrote.
Parents say the move to healthy snacks at checkouts will help parents deal with the "nightmare" of waiting with their children in junk food-laden queues.
"Great idea! I manage to get around the supermarket without the kids heading to the confectionery aisle but as soon as we get to the checkout...bingo!!" wrote Me Matt Harris.
"Great news for the poor parents who at the moment have toddler tantrums at the checkout!" Karman Patrick says.
Some called for New World to launch this initiative nationwide.
"Let's see ALL New world's follow suit," Jill Robinson petitioned on Facebook.
However, not everyone is a fan of the changes, with some complaining the supermarket was telling customers what they should buy.
"What the hell happened to taking responsibility for your own choices? PC gone mad," wrote Robyn Broughton.
The chain has also announced it will try and phase out plastic bags by the end of 2018.
