Watch: Couples get down and dirty in annual North American wife carrying championships

It’s said that behind every great man is an even greater woman and now there’s a sport that appears to illustrate just that.

Dozens of married couples entered the 18th annual North American Wife Carrying Championship in Maine at the weekend.

Contestants hauled their significant others over obstacles and through a water pit during the competition.

Jake and Kirsten Barney took out top honours with a time of 58.26 seconds to claim the top prize of 12 cases of beer and a cheque for five times Kirsten's weight in pounds - totalling NZ$890.

The happy couple will go to Finland for the world wife carrying championship next June.
