A threatened juvenile loggerhead turtle is being checked after washing up on Ninety Mile Beach yesterday.

Kelly Tarlton's posted a video of the turtle, which appears to be quite young, on Facebook saying it has been taken to Auckland Zoo for a check up.

"All going well, he'll be back with us so that we can start his rehabilitation and get him fighting fit for his release back into the wild," Kelly Tarlton's wrote.

Loggerhead turtles live in many of the world's oceans and can reach weights of up to 450kg at maturity, but typically weigh in about 135kg.

They are listed as threatened under the IUCN classification system, and are often caught as by-catches in commercial fishing nets.
