Person dies after car crashes into tree in central Christchurch

A person has died after a car crashed into a tree in central Christchurch early this morning.

Police said it was called to a crash near the intersection of Montreal St and Armagh St at around 3.20am.

"Sadly, the sole occupant of the vehicle was found deceased at the scene," police said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said two fire trucks from central Christchurch responded.

The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene, before reopening shortly after 7am.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
