Hyrox has reportedly changed its rules after allowing an Australian athlete who soiled herself mid-race to finish, and win, the event.
The incident involved Australian world record champion Joanna Wietrzyk, who competed in the indoor endurance fitness event in Beijing over the weekend.
Images and video was shared showing faecal matter running down her legs as she completed events including the sled push, rowing machine and medicine ball throw.
Following the race, Wietrzyk posted a now-deleted Instagram post, saying: "Go hard or go home… a win is a win. In all seriousness, thank you for all the support. I’ll be back soon x."
In a statement, the organiser of the event confirmed that contaminated equipment was removed, affected race lanes were closed for sanitation, and carpet replacement and deep-cleaning procedures were scheduled overnight before the rest of the participants began the following day.
In response to criticism about letting the woman finish the event, Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste apologised to all those affected "directly or indirectly" by the incident and said the brand was working to make immediate rule changes.
