The "shoulder season" transitioning into spring is upon us as a cold front sweeps up the country, MetService says, bringing rain, showers and a dusting of snow.
The front has today brought rain and pockets of snow to the South Island. As it makes its way north, the North Island should brace for rain, showers and a dusting of snow in higher areas.
"We're seeing pretty typical shoulder season weather right now. That front is expected to move away tonight, but you won't want to ditch the umbrella just yet," MetService meteorologist Vivien Whyte said.
The front will be followed by a showery southwest flow, bringing unsettled weather for many on Friday. The north was forecast to see scattered rain, with showers developing in the west and gusty westerlies down south. However, there will be a few pockets of fine weather, especially for the capital.
This southwest flow will settle in for most over the weekend, Whyte said.
"Most regions can look forward to a decent weekend with ample pockets of sun to enjoy the outdoors, despite isolated showers across the motu and a period of rain for the south and west of the South Island on Saturday night."
For Warriors fans supporting the team as they take on the Dolphins on Saturday, the forecast for Auckland is mainly fine – but those in the open stands may want to pack a raincoat, with stray showers and brisk southwesterlies on the cards.
