President Donald Trump weighed in on Prince Harry and wife Meghan's return to the United Kingdom last week, saying he's "happy" they left the United States after six years and accusing the couple of treating the royal family with “great disrespect”.

"I was not a fan," Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office.

The president declared he had a good alliance with Queen Elizabeth II saying, "I had a very good relationship with the Queen, really good. I got to know her very well".

He also claims to have a "really good relationship with King Charles".

"I knew him as Prince Charles and King Charles, I've known him for a long time. He's great, great guy."

Trump went on to say he thought the couple "treated the royal family with great disrespect, I didn't like it".

"I didn't like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles," Trump said.

Musing on it, he finished by saying, "if I were the Royal Family, I would not have taken them back."

Prince Harry and Meghan announced last month they were heading back across the pond for an extended stay, but that they wouldn't resume their working roles as members of the royal family.

Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are enrolled in a British school and are expected to start in September.

It is not clear where the family has settled, but it is believed to be a nonroyal residence outside of London.

The move came amid rumours of the Duchess making a possible return to acting, where she is rumoured to appear in the Netflix series The Gentlemen.

The Sussexes also hold a $100m deal with Netflix, where Meghan released her lifestyle series With Love, Meghan.

A move to the UK has also suggested the Duchess may look to expand her US cooking brand As Ever.

Prior to the relocation, Meghan and the children last visited the UK in July of this year, visiting King Charles at his Highgrove Estate.
