Five people are in custody on suspicion of murder after a newborn baby girl died from stab wounds in England.
South Yorkshire Police received reports of concern for a newborn baby in the city of Sheffield, east of Manchester, at around 6am (local time) on Sunday.
A baby girl was located dead at the scene, with a post-mortem determining she died as a result of stab wounds.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said first responders, paramedics and detectives leading the murder investigation had been profoundly affected by the baby’s death.
“We recognise this is deeply distressing for those who would have loved to have a chance to love this baby girl, for the emergency services who responded and for the community who will inevitably be shocked by this incident,” he said.
“Our commitment to this little girl is unwavering. We will confront every difficult and distressing challenge and pursue every line of inquiry with determination and care to secure justice for her.”
A total of seven people aged between 15 and 38 were arrested on suspicion of murder. Two people, aged 26 and 37, have since been bailed.
