A police officer is in a critical condition after being struck by a fleeing driver while laying road spikes in Palmerston North overnight.

The officer was airlifted to Wellington Hospital, while a second officer was treated for minor injuries.

Central District Commander Superintendent Dion Bennett is expected to media from Police National Headquarters in Wellington at around 1.45pm.

Police Minister Mark Mitchell is also travelling to Wellington today to offer his support.
