Dead rodents in reservoir prompt boil water notice west of Taupō

Taupō District Council has issued a boil water notice for the Mapara area after dead rodents were found during a routine inspection of a reservoir serving the community.

Residents west of Taupō have been told to boil their drinking water after dead rodents were discovered during a routine inspection of a reservoir supplying the community.

Taupō District Council issued the boil water notice for the Mapara area on Friday afternoon, after the carcasses were found in the reservoir.

In a statement, the council said: "We are therefore advising all residents in the Mapara area, as shown in red on the map below, to boil water for human consumption (for example, drinking, cooking and brushing teeth) until further notice."

The council said heating water to boiling point in a jug or pot was sufficient. No treatment was required for other uses such as washing clothes or bathing.

The council added it was carrying out further testing on the water supply "and should have results within 24 hours".
