Liam Lawson set for shock return to Red Bull Racing

Liam Lawson ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix

Kiwi F1 driver Liam Lawson is set for a surprise return to Red Bull's top team as injury cover at this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix in Zanvoort.

The 24-year-old is expected to step up from Racing Bulls to replace French-Algerian driver Isack Hadjar, who is almost certain to miss the race with a wrist injury.

1News understands Red Bull Racing will confirm the change later tonight.

The call-up means Lawson will line up alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen during his final home race at Zandvoort.

It's a significant opportunity for the Kiwi, who was demoted from Red Bull's top team in early 2025 after just two races, as he is still without a confirmed race seat for 2027.

Interestingly, the Kiwi is set to receive the nod ahead of Red Bull reserve driver Yuki Tsunoda, who is expected to return to Racing Bull's and partner with Lawson's teammate Lindblad this weekend.

Lawson had enjoyed a strong 2026 season with Racing Bulls, entering Formula 1's summer break ninth in the driver's championship on 43 points — the highest ranked driver outside the sport's top four teams.

Circuit Zandvoort is hosting its last Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix race weekend this year.

The private promoters of the course – Circuit Zandvoort, TIG Sports, and SportVibes – have chosen to exit the F1circuit after Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix.

The Dutch Grand Prix will take place Monday (1am NZT).
