Community conservation groups in Hauraki and Coromandel have celebrated decades of mahi by whipping up some creative culinary creations – including a cake featuring a stoat caught in a trap.
"A few of our local conservation groups have been celebrating some pretty amazing milestones recently, and they have done it in the sweetest way possible," Department of Conservation Hauraki-Coromandel said on social media.
"These conservation-themed cakes are a great reminder of the passion, creativity and dedication within our Hauraki-Coromandel communities."
Habitat Tuateawa marked 30 years of community conservation with a cake dotted with kiwi footprints.
Thames Coast Kiwi Care, meanwhile, celebrated 20 years of community conservation with an aptly-designed cake featuring a stoat caught in a trap.
Predator Free Whangapoua's creative juices were flowing, bringing the community together at their predator free day with a cake resembling a possum on its back and decorated with pōhutukawa flowers.
"These cakes look almost too good to eat, almost," DOC said.
"Thank you to all the volunteers and community champions working hard to protect our native species and special places. Community conservation is something worth celebrating."
