A man has been taken into police custody after reports of a gun being fired in the Taranaki town of Stratford this morning.
Police were called to Oberon St at around 9am after a report of a person in possession of a firearm.
"It is believed the firearm was allegedly discharged. There are no reports of injuries," Inspector Mark Miller said.
Several schools and premises in the area were placed into lockdown as a precaution, with cordons in place as police made inquiries.
Miller said an alleged offender had since been located and charges were being considered.

Stratford High School and Taranaki Diocesan for Girls, Little Steps Stratford and Koru Kindergarden all went into lockdown.
