Residents in the lower North and upper South Islands were jolted by a light earthquake late last night.
According to GeoNet, the 4.6-magnitude quake struck at 11.09pm, 30 kilometres north-west of Porirua, at a depth of 38km.
The quake was reported by nearly 9000 people across Wellington, Manawatū-Whanganui, Taranaki, and the upper South Island.
On X, one person described the jolt as "shaky", while another said: "Wobble wobble."
"Nice decent shake here in Wellington," another said.
One person wrote: "F***ing hell, that one went boom!"
An hour later, at 12.13am, another "weak" 2.7-magnitude quake struck 10 km south-east of Collingwood at a depth of 8km.
It comes after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake near Taumarunui last week and a 5.9-magnitude quake that struck north of Te Anau a week before.
