A woman has been arrested in Hamilton after she allegedly used fake bank transfers to scam people out of $100,000 worth of items through online marketplaces.

Police said an investigation was launched after reports of similar scams, and are now warning people to "never trust a screenshot".

"It is believed marketplace sellers have met with the woman, who has then allegedly provided fake bank transfers to purchase and receive the item," Detective Sergeant Logan Oliver said.

Over the last two months, the 26-year-old woman allegedly received $100,000 worth of "high-value items", including vehicles and electronic goods.

Police identified the woman, and she was taken into custody.

She appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday charged with seven counts of using a forged document, one charge of theft, and one charge of take/obtain/use a document for pecuniary advantage.

The woman was remanded on bail and was due to reappear in court on July 31.

Oliver said it was a reminder for sellers using online marketplaces to take steps to avoid scams.

"When you're selling, never trust a screenshot anyone shows or sends you that says a payment has been made. Check your own bank account to make sure payment has gone through.

"Alternatively, it is best for all parties to agree to pay, or be paid, for items in cash and in-person. Ideally in a public place with CCTV coverage.

"If you believe you may have been victim of a scam or seem this situation may be familiar, please report the matter to police."
