Matatū's Super Rugby Aupiki clash with the Hurricanes Poua in Timaru was briefly interrupted today after the referee suffered a facial injury in an accidental collision with a player.
The incident occurred during a Matatū lineout, when a player chasing an intentionally overthrown ball accidentally caught referee Erin Doherty in the face with an elbow.
Play was stopped for eight minutes at Fraser Park while Doherty received treatment for a cut above her eyebrow.
Assistant referee Warwick Lahmert took over after officials swapped communication equipment, while Chloe Sampson remained on the touchline.
Hurricanes Poua would go on to pip Matatū 33-31.
