Celebrating Matariki: What to watch on TVNZ

Matariki Herenga Waka hosted by Stacey Morrison and Mātai Smith will be live from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei on Friday at 6am.

Matariki marks the Māori new year, with the sun, stars and lunar phase aligning.

This year marks the fifth anniversary since Matariki became a public holiday and many Kiwis nationwide have embraced the opportunity to gather, honour those who have passed, celebrate the present and look ahead to the future.

To celebrate Matariki, TVNZ+ has compiled a special collection to mark the long weekend, featuring live coverage of Friday’s Matariki Herenga Waka which will stream live from Takaparawhau (Bastion Point) on TVNZ+ from 6am.

The collection also features the debut of Kiwi feature film Sgt. Haane and some classic Kiwi content from yesteryear.
