Death of person found in Auckland pond remains 'unexplained'

Police and emergency services are investigating the scene.

Police are treating the discovery of a body in a pond at a south Auckland park yesterday as "unexplained".

Emergency services were called at 4.08pm on Monday after a member of the public found the body in a secluded area of Rongomai Park.

Footage captured at the scene by 1News showed police officers setting up for their investigation.

Police said search and rescue teams have recovered the body, with a post-mortem expected to take place today.

"At this stage, the death remains unexplained and formal identification procedures are underway," a police spokesperson said.

The park has since reopened, but police said the public might still see an increased police presence as inquiries continue.
