Lincraft to close physical stores after 80 years

Fabric and craft retailer Lincraft has announced the closure of it's physical stores in New Zealand and Australia after 80 years in business.

Stores in New Zealand were currently located in Thames, Taupō, Upper Hutt, Riccarton, Linwood and Dunedin.

The company said the decision followed a prolonged period of challenging retail conditions, changing consumer behaviour, increased operating costs and growing pressure from low-cost international online competitors.

Managing director John Maguire said the company was working to support the 300+ staff affected by the closures across New Zealand and Australia.

"This has been an extremely difficult decision, particularly because of the impact on our team members, many of whom have given years of loyal service to the business."

The store will continue operations through an online platform.

The closure process was set to begin in the coming months and will be managed progressively on a store-by-store basis depending on lease arrangements.
