Wellington Airport fire believed to have started in wall cavity wiring

A fire which broke out in a Wellington Airport terminal last night causing temporary travel disruptions is believed to have started from wiring inside a wall cavity.

The airport’s southwest pier and main terminal building were evacuated at around 7.15pm last night after a fire set off smoke alarms.

Multiple crews from FENZ and the Airport Fire Service responded, with flights into Wellington temporarily diverted as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

In a statement just before midnight yesterday, Wellington Airport said the fire had been put out. There were no reports of injuries.

FENZ said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Wellington Airport chief executive officer Matt Clarke said investigators believed the source of the fire was from wiring inside a wall cavity.

"I imagine there will be some more information as we move further into the investigation, but it looks like it's a wiring fault at this stage," Clarke told 1News.

Clarke said operations had resumed as normal at the airport today and thanked emergency crews and staff for their swift response.

The source of the fire was believed to be a wiring fault.

"There was one Air New Zealand flight cancelled because the aircraft had been diverted last night, but everything else has been remarkably normal," he said.

"We're very proud of the team to get things up and running despite losing a big part of the facility for a while."

Earlier today, Wellington Airport said it would be "open as usual" today but warned of possible "flow-on disruptions" from last night's fire.

Passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines for any updates.
