Two people have been killed in a single-vehicle crash that has closed a section of state highway north-east of Whanganui this morning.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 4 near Mangotai Rd at around 9.15am.
"Sadly, both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.
The road remained closed as emergency services worked at the scene.
NZTA advised road users to avoid the area and use an alternative route.

"Southbound traffic use SH49, turn right onto SH1, turn right onto SH3 and back onto SH4. Reverse for northbound traffic," an NZTA spokesperson.
"This detour will add at least 2 hours to your journey time."
