An 18-year-old driver ran into bushes after allegedly being spotted driving at speed north of Auckland last night.
At around 8.30pm, the police spotted a vehicle on Waiwhui Conical Peak Road in Warkworth, allegedly travelling twice the speed limit.
Waitematā Road Policing Manager Inspector Jason Edwards said officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, however the instruction was ignored.
“No pursuit was initiated, however police were able to track the vehicle as it travelled south before being successfully spiked in the Puhoi tunnel.
“The vehicle was quickly abandoned and two people were seen running into nearby bush.”
Edwards said the eagle helicopter was able to follow the pair as they attempted to avoid being caught.
A male and female were taken into custody a short time later.
“I’m pleased we were able to resolve this situation quickly.
“This reckless behaviour puts people’s safety at risk and the police remain committed to reducing the risk of harm by getting dangerous drivers off the road," Edwards added.
The man is due to appear in North Shore District Court on June 17, charged with failing to stop, driving while disqualified and possession of cannabis.
