Man seen presenting a firearm at a group in Palmerston North

The Square in central Palmerston North

CCTV monitoring turned up a chilling episode in central Palmerston North early this morning – leading police to arresting a man and seizing a firearm with live ammunition.

Camera operators observed a disorder incident outside an establishment on The Square and alerted the police immediately, providing real-time updates as events unfolded.

CCTV cameras showed a man presenting what appeared to be a firearm towards a group of people.

Police units went to the area and used information from camera operators to locate an alleged offender nearby. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Enquiries led to the recovery of a firearm, live ammunition and drugs from a nearby vehicle.

Acting Inspector Nick Lewer, said the incident was a great example of teamwork in front-line policing.

“The operators’ ability to identify risk early, communicate clearly and support officers in real time was instrumental in ensuring a safe and successful outcome,” he said.

“This is a great example of how proactive monitoring can prevent harm and help keep our communities safe."

A 20-year-old man faces firearm and drug charges in Palmerston North District Court this afternoon.
