Many across the country have woken to noticeably colder temperatures today, with some areas dropping below freezing.
MetService said it was "a cold and frosty start for many", with Wānaka and Hamilton both recording 0C, and Queenstown and Timaru dropping to -1C at 7am.
Taumaranui recorded the coldest start to the day with -2C, while Dunedin was the highest at 12C.
"Areas with clear overnight skies (without the blanket of cloud) have seen temperatures drop to the low single digits with a few places below freezing!"
The temperature dip followed a day of intense wind and high swells for Wellington's south coast, driven by a deep low-pressure system generating powerful southwesterly winds across the Southern Ocean.
Meteorologist Heather Keats said the weather would be "a bit calmer" today as the large ridge of high pressure over the Tasman Sea slowly moves across the country.
"The wind and swell is gradually easing across the day and skies are mainly fine with morning frost for inland spots," she said.
She said the morning frost would "thaw quickly" for many areas and be replaced by blue, sunny skies.
