A 38-year-old Auckland man allegedly attempted to drown a police dog after being confronted while naked after trying to enter a property.
Police received a report at about 5pm yesterday of a man who had allegedly taken a crowbar and made his way into the back of a property in Point Chevalier.
Auckland city west area response manager Senior Sergeant Guy Baldwin said officers with a dog unit arrived promptly at the address on Great North Road.
The man was subsequently located in a nearby swamp, and "was refusing to come out and was resisting staff", Baldwin said. The police dog was then deployed.
"The man has then proceeded to assault and attempt to drown the dog before officers stepped in to prevent any further harm to the dog."
Police managed to take the man into custody, but Baldwin noted he had suffered "several dog bites" and was transported to hospital for treatment under police guard.
The man has been charged with being unlawfully in an enclosed yard, property theft, injuring a police dog, and resisting police.
Baldwin added, "thankfully, the officers and police dog were not seriously injured".
"Incidents like this reflect the challenging environment police – and police dogs – work in and demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring the safety of the community."
