More than one million New Zealanders have rolled up their sleeves for a flu vaccination as the country heads into winter, according to Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora.
The milestone comes just days before winter officially begins on June 1, with those who had not yet been vaccinated encouraged to book an appointment.
Nikki Canter-Burgoyne, Health NZ Director for Prevention Immunisations, said reaching one million vaccinations was a "fantastic achievement".
“It shows the strong commitment of people to protect themselves, their families, and the wider community from the flu,” she said.
Canter-Burgoyne warned winter was only just beginning and influenza could still have a serious impact, particularly on vulnerable people.
“While for many people influenza can be a mild illness, for some people it can cause serious illness and hospitalisation," she said.
"The protection that the flu vaccine provides reduces the risk of complications.”
Health New Zealand was urging anyone who had not received a flu vaccination to do so now.
"Now is the time to make an appointment with your GP or health care provider. There are many pharmacies across the country that offer a walk in service," Canter-Burgoyne said.
People were also encouraged to ensure they were up to date with other recommended immunisations, including Covid-19, pertussis (whooping cough) and measles.
Flu vaccinations can be accessed through GPs, pharmacies, and other providers across the country including many midwives.
