Two Lotto players win $500k each, Powerball jackpot rolls to $25m

Two Lotto players — one in Auckland's south and one in South Taranaki — are half a million dollars richer after each winning $500,000 with Lotto First Division in Wednesday night's live draw.

Lotto NZ's Wednesday draw produced the numbers 6, 17, 19, 21, 27 and 32, with 28 as the Bonus Ball and 10 as the Powerball.

The winning Lotto tickets were sold at Freshchoice Waiuku in Waiuku, and Paper Plus Hāwera in Hāwera.

Powerball was not struck on Wednesday night, meaning the jackpot rolls over to Saturday's draw — where it will sit at $25 million.

Strike Four also rolled over to $400,000 on Wednesday night, adding to the Saturday prize pool.

Anyone who bought a ticket from either store should check their numbers via the MyLotto app or in-store.

'Gamechanger' Powerball changes

The win comes ahead of a significant shake-up to the Powerball game — its biggest format change in close to two decades.

From the second half of 2026, Lotto NZ will expand the number of Powerballs from 10 to 14, add a new Division 8 prize tier, lift the starting jackpot from $4 million to $5 million, and raise the maximum jackpot cap from $50 million to $60 million. The price to play would not change.

Chief executive Jason Delamore said the new Division 8 would lift the total number of weekly Powerball winners by around 30% — from roughly 47,000 to 62,000 on average per draw.

"The new Powerball Division 8 is a gamechanger. While we look forward to sending more prizes back to players every draw, we want to be upfront that Powerball Division 1 will be won less frequently due to the greater number of possible line combinations in each draw."
