Sal's Pizza burglary didn't pan out – cashbox dumped on Dunedin road

Around $700 cash was found in discarded till as officers track down suspects linked to break-in at a central city Sal’s Pizza.

A pair of thieves’ plan to rob a Dunedin pizza outlet has hit a slice of misfortune after a group of students came across a cash-filled till lying in a central city street last night.

Police received a report at around 10.30pm on Tuesday of local students coming across a cash register on George St.

Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman said there was $700 cash inside it.

"Back at the station, we discovered the till had been jammed shut but there was $700 cash inside it."

Inquiries led police to Sal's Pizza on Great King St, where officers found damage to the front doors and signs of forced entry, Notman said.

CCTV footage showed two people of interest, with police continuing their inquiries.

Anyone with relevant information should get in contact with police on 105.
