The Breakers have wrapped up a global search for a new coach with the appointment of Gordon Herbert, the man who led Germany to their 2023 FIBA World Cup title.
The 67-year-old has an extensive coaching record in Europe and Canada, most recently working with Bayern Munich and the Canadian national side.
"Gordon is a world-class strategist with a proven track record of winning at the highest possible level," said Dillon Boucher, Breakers president of basketball operations.
Herbert will replace Finn Petteri Koponen who left the franchise at the end of last season after a mixed two years in charge with the former championship winning team finished 9th and then 7th.
Despite being without a confirmed coach for the past three months, the Breakers have still managed to sign marquee talent with Sam Mennenga and Parker Jackson-Cartwright returning while DJ Vasiljevic and Kouat Noi have joined from other NBL teams.
Breakers Club chairman Marc Mitchell said the Herbert appointment is a key piece of the puzzle.
“Gordon has proven he can deliver championship winning, high-performance teams.”
Herbert is currently the national coach of Canada and will continue in that role.
He will arrive in August and plans to bring an assistant coach with him to Auckland.
