A body of a baby has been found on the side of the road in Blenheim this week, police have confirmed.

Police were called to Wairau Bar Rd yesterday just before 1.30pm after a machinery operator had found the infant's body.

Yesterday, police said the road, located on the outskirts of Blenheim, would remain closed overnight before a scene examination could be carried out this morning.

Stuff reported a local woman saw a tractor earlier in the day that appeared to be set up for mowing or roadside work, with a back blade attached and roadworks banners hanging from it.

When she returned about 25 minutes later, she said police had blocked the road, the tractor had been moved and she heard there had been a death in the area.

Today, Marlborough area commander Inspector Simon Feltham said police were working to determine the circumstances in which the body came to be at this location.

"A scene examination was completed today, and Wairau Bar Rd has since re-opened to the public."

Feltham said as part of inquiries, police are "extremely concerned" about the mother and the wider family of the infant.

"Police would like to speak with them as soon as possible to ensure they receive the support that they require at this time."

Feltham asked anybody with information which could assist police to contact it via 105 either over the phone or online.
