A rural road will remain closed overnight as police investigate a sudden death in Blenheim this afternoon.
Wairau Bar Rd on the outskirts of Blenheim was first closed between Ferry Rd and Dicks Rd earlier this afternoon while police responded to an incident.
Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham later confirmed officers were "investigating a sudden death" after being called to the road just before 1.30pm.
"The road remains closed, with a scene guard to remain in place overnight," Feltham said.
"A scene examination is due to be carried out tomorrow morning.
"We continue to advise people to avoid the area."
Police said earlier there was "not believed to be any risk to public safety".
Wairau Bar Rd leads to the Wairau Bar, also known as Te Pokohiwi, a gravel bar at the mouth of the Wairau River in Cloudy Bay. The site is one of the earliest known human settlements in New Zealand, dating back to about 1280.
