A Whangārei man has been caught on camera helping police arrest a fleeing offender after tackling him to the ground outside central city café — with the moment captured on CCTV.

Police had received multiple calls about a disorderly male in the Whangārei CBD, primarily along Cameron St at around 7.40am this morning.

"The male was observed kicking shop windows, which resulted in one shop front being smashed, and throwing outdoor furniture as he moved through the area," Whangārei area response manager Senior Sergeant Rene Rakete said.

As officers pursued the alleged offender towards Vine St, a member of the public outside Honey’s Coffee Shop became aware of the situation unfolding.

Rakete said the man tackled the alleged offender to the ground as officers closed in behind him, allowing police to take the person into custody.

“I’d like to acknowledge this man’s actions — his intervention prevented further damage and ensured the matter was brought under control quickly,” Rakete said.

Police said while they generally advise the public not to put themselves at risk, they appreciated the assistance in this instance.

Rakete added he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the man earned a call-up from the All Blacks after his effort.

Commenting on police's post of the video, Northland Rugby Union described the man's tackle as "good form".

"Might get him to run a tackle clinic," they said.

No injuries were reported.
