A driver allegedly hit speeds of 200km/h in an attempt to evade police in Auckland overnight.

Officers spotted the "vehicle of interest" travelling on Morie Road in Massey at around 2.20am.

Senior Sergeant Jon Winthrop said the driver was under a licence suspension and should not have been on the road.

Officers signalled the vehicle to stop at the intersection of Moire Road and Royal Road.

“The driver pulled into a carpark and indicated his intention to stop, before quickly accelerating towards the motorway on-ramp,” Winthrop said.

Heading south on State Highway 16, the vehicle hit speeds of up to 200km/h. "Due to the dangerous nature of the driving, the vehicle was not pursued."

Cameras tracked the vehicle as it made its way onto State Highway 1 and into South Auckland.

The driver spotted police laying road spikes and stopped on Charles Prevost Drive in Manurewa.

“The driver was taken into custody without incident,” Winthrop said.

When officers searched the vehicle, they found cannabis and other paraphernalia.

The driver was handed a 28-day licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded.

A 21-year-old was due to appear in the Waitākere District Court on 18 May, charged with failing to stop, driving in a dangerous manner, possession of cannabis, and possession of a pipe or utensil for cannabis.
