An Australian police officer is recovering in hospital after being stabbed during an arrest following a dramatic suburban car chase.
It's alleged the 26-year-old behind the wheel of the Kia SUV repeatedly refused to stop, drove at high speed on the wrong side of the road and aimed the vehicle at police who were laying down pursuit spikes.
He was eventually taken into custody after colliding with another car, crashing into a tree and then attempting to flee on foot.
Not, though, before brandishing a knife at the officers who chased him and stabbing one in the arm and torso.
Police say they received multiple reports of the Queensland-registered vehicle being driven dangerously across Canberra's south on Friday morning.
After a failed bid to stop the SUV in Wanniassa shortly after 9am, officers spotted and followed it through Tuggeranong about an hour later.
The car collided with another vehicle and then slammed into the tree at Richardson about 11am, just prior to the arrest.
The stabbed officer was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injures.
It's alleged the Yarralumla man provided false details during his arrest and that a replica firearm was located inside the stolen Kia.
The accused man was charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving at police, assault and possessing a prohibited firearm and a knife without reasonable excuse.
He was expected to face ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday.
