A third person has died after a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 in Marlborough yesterday.
Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash near Redwood Pass, south of Blenheim at around 10.40am on Sunday.
Police said two people died at the scene "despite best efforts by emergency services".
"Sadly, despite best efforts by medical professionals, a third person has since passed away," a police spokesperson confirmed.
"The two other injured remain in hospital in a serious and critical condition."
Hato Hone St John responded with four helicopters, three ambulances, two managers, and one major incident support team vehicle.
Fire and Emergency NZ crews worked to extract multiple people who were left trapped in both vehicles.
Two people in a critical condition were airlifted to Wellington Hospital, and one person in a critical condition was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.
State Highway 1 was closed but has since been reopened with temporary speed limits in place.
The serious crash unit conducted a scene examination, and inquiries into the crash remained ongoing.
