Golfer Michael Campbell’s previous job leaves interviewer ‘shook’

New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell revealed his previous gig during a recent interview.

Michael Campbell has revealed he was a cage dancer at a night club before becoming one of New Zealand’s most successful golf players – and earned “good money” while doing so.

In a recent interview posted to the eulegendstour Instagram account, Campbell was asked alongside other golf stars which jobs they had previously worked at.

“I can’t believe I’m going to say this,” Campbell responded.

While other golfers answered with jobs such as being a breakfast waiter or a garage cleaner – Campbell’s answer left the interviewers “shook”.

“Um… to earn a bit of extra money, I used to be a cage dancer,” Campbell said.

“No you didn’t,” the interviewer said back.

Campbell then explained he had the job when he was about 19 or 20-years-old to pay for his golf related travel.

“When I was an amateur to get money to travel around New Zealand, I got this opportunity to dance at this night club, and had two cages on either side of the stage.”

He said the job was “good money”.

“I must say, I must have earned about 2500 New Zealand dollars that one night, through tipping, so I was pretty good you know. But not anymore.”

Campbell went on to become a professional golfer in 1995 and won the 2005 US Open.

Later the same year, Campbell claimed what was the largest prize in golf after winning the HSBC World Match Play Championship worth £1,000,000 (NZ$2.25 million).

He retired from golf in 2015 after struggling to reach the same heights as his previous wins. In an interview with 1News last year, he explained his journey from growing up in Tītahi Bay and why winning one major was enough.
