New Zealand's Lulu Sun has been knocked out of the Australian Open singles programme after losing to Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova in straight sets today.
Fruhvirtova, 20, beat Sun 6-3, 7-5 in Melbourne after leading 3-1 in the first set.
Sun, New Zealand’s top ranked women’s tennis player, was recently forced to withdraw from the ASB Classic in Auckland due to a wrist injury.
The 24-year-old has not played competitively since reaching the final of China’s Guangzhou Open in October.
Sun had qualified directly for the Australian Open under her world ranking of 90. Fruhvirtova is ranked 130.
Sun made tennis history when becoming the first New Zealand woman to achieve a quarter-final win at Wimbledon in the Open era in 2024.
